Statement on the Freezing of Funds for the NY Times Ad

The Cuba Solidarity Campaign in the UK deplores the action of the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control in witholding monies donated towards the advertisement in the New York Times by French and Spanish solidarity groups whose bank accounts have been frozen pending investigation.

Not only is this an attempt to compound the media's silence on the case of the Cuban Five in the US but it also seeks to sanction all those who struggle to communicate the truth about Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez who have been unjustly imprisoned for fighting terrorism perpetrated against Cuba for 45 years.

The Cuba Solidarity Campaign calls on the OFAC to release the donations destined for the organisation "Peace for Cuba" which amount to more than $7000 and stands in solidarity with its French and Spanish sister organisations in defending the right for the truth to be heard.

We also reaffirm our commitment to securing the freedom of the Cuban Five in the name of justice and humanity and to ending the US blockade which denies the Cuban people the right to determine their own future free from external interference.

Hands off Cuba! Stop US Aggression!

The US Free the Five Committee announced on 25th February that the funds have now been unfrozen by the US authorities which had been donated by the French and Spanish solidarity organisations and that the advert will appear in the NY Times on Thursday, 26th February.
